Type of restaurant: French Provencal
Class of restaurant: Voted by Business Day as South Africa's best restaurant two years in a row. In my opinion, it deserves the highest of restaurant ratings and is certainly worth a visit.
Décor/ambiance: Housed in a restored breakfast room, with views of the pool and cricket fields.
Wine selection and prices: Wonderful selection of South African wines. We chose a savory Merlot to accompany our springbok. The full-bodied wine was a terrific value and presented at just the right temperature. As with most of the South African wines, the quality was excellent and the prices reasonable.
Cocktail selection and prices: There was a selection of cocktails available from the hostess.Instead, we chose to enjoy a glass of sparkling wine.
Quality of food: The food and presentation were professional and worthy of a fine Parisian restaurant. The springbok was tender and tasty with a delightful sauce and just enough spice to accent the flavors. The vegetables were fresh and flavorful.
Cost: Very reasonable for the cuisine offered. This was the most expensive meal we enjoyed in South Africa, but by all accounts, worth twice the price.
Service: The service was prompt, courteous and professional.
Reservations required: Yes, highly recommended
Ease of making reservations: Our hotel concierge was able to get us a reservation at La Colombe.
