Challenges: A bit outside the usual tourist path; weather conditions such as intense heat, rain; need a car or tour to get there.
Advantages: Driving west in southern Palm Beach County around Boca Raton or Delray Beach it is extraordinary to run into this amazing Japanese oasis. Of course, you know you are not in Japan. Or do you? The marvelous gardens transport you to a long ago and far away Japan.
Shopping: There is a gift shop inside the main building with Japanese themed items, t-shirts, tea sets and souvenirs.
Restaurant: There is aJapanese style cafe in the main building. If you become hungry while visiting the gardens, it is a lovely place to sit outdoors and enjoy the view of the lake while you eat.
Other: No food is allowed inside the gardens. There are picnic tables outside the gardens where you can enjoy a snack. In addition to the brilliant scenery, you might be lucky and spot a carp in the water, a turtle, an alligator or even a wedding party.
Visits: Several times over the years, most recently in January 2004
Overall Impression: For a step in a different direction, Morikami offers a wonderful alternative to the usual tourist attraction. In a beautiful setting, coupled with art exhibits, classes and other special activities and festivals, it provides restful escape from the everyday.
